Principles of Membership

AIRMIC - Principles of Membership

Members relations with each other

AIRMIC members create value by exchanging information with each other which saves them time and gives them confidence in possible courses of action. Discussion wherever possible should be open and wide ranging, and it requires that members trust each other to retain confidentiality and to be tolerant of mistakes or unusual ideas.

It is also important that there are no hidden agendas by which  one member may profit at the expense of another or without the others’ tacit agreement.

To avoid conflicts of interest the following guidelines have been drawn up:

The way information is exchanged

  • Unless otherwise stated all  meetings shall be conducted under the Chatham House Rule in that what is said may be reported outside the meeting but not attributed. See http://www.chathamhouse.org.uk/about/chathamhouserule/
  • Where there is a need for greater confidentiality (Council Meetings would be included in this) then the Chairman shall so advise and gain agreement from all present before starting the meeting.
  • Where non- members and/or the press are present the Chairman shall either gain their agreement to Chatham House Rules or shall declare the meeting open.
  • Emails between AIRMIC members shall be treated as confidential  and not sent on to others unless permission has been given by the sender.
  • Information on the AIRMIC website and in AIRMIC Express shall be treated as confidential by the membership and not disclosed outside the membership.

Members’ commercial self interest

  • Disclosure of commercially sensitive information is a matter for each member or group of members to judge. Members must appreciate that there will be certain topics which do not permit the inclusion of all members.
  • Members must not expect or encourage other members to act against their or their organisation’s commercial self interest.
  • No member shall utilise his/her membership as a vehicle for the development of the business of that member or his employer with other members.

Public Relations

  • AIRMIC will not mention, without prior agreement, any member or their organisation by name in any public document or public meeting.
  • AIRMIC will not provide telephone numbers or contact details of members to the Press  without members’ prior consent.

Regulation. and the Law

  • Legal compliance must be maintained at all times with regard to competition law. Existing guidance exists for committee chairmen as drafted by BLG and distributed by the Executive Director to those chairmen
  • Membership of AIRMIC does not absolve any member of adhering to the law, in particular the laws of libel and slander.
