WEAKENING OF WESTERN INFLUENCE ON GLOBAL AGENDA IS THE MOST CONCERNING GEOPOLITICAL TREND: AIRMIC MEMBERS

24th April 2024

The weakening of Western influence on the global agenda, as well as the rising influence of Iran with support from Russia and China, is the most concerning geopolitical trend for half of respondents in the Airmic Big Question survey this week.

Last year, WTW published a report mapping the new geopolitical divides, which showed how the emerging world is increasingly divided between West and East, with consequences for business.

The Airmic survey respondents were also concerned about the Israel-Hamas war, as well as the diversion of global attention away from the Ukraine crisis.

Leigh-Anne Slade, Head of Media, Communications and Interest Groups, Airmic, said: “All of these geopolitical megatrends are individually concerning for Airmic members, but what is of most concern is that they are all occurring at the same time, which could have an amplifying effect on each other.

Hoe-Yeong Loke, Head of Research, Airmic, said: “Airmic members are concerned about the flux in issues such as the setting of global standards, which the weakening of Western influence on the global agenda can bring. Businesses have been accustomed to the stability of the US-led world order after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.

The multiplicity of artificial intelligence (AI) standards today is but one example, with China producing its own take on AI regulations that challenge the US, UK and European Union versions.

The geopolitics plenary session on 4 June at the Airmic Conference in Edinburgh will address the megatrends impacting risk professionals and their organisations, including the “year of elections” that is 2024, when half of the world’s population will go to the ballot box.
